UF membranes can be divided into inorganic membranes and organic membranes according to the different membrane materials.

Organic membrane: Organic membranes are mainly made of polymer materials, such as cellulose acetate, aromatic polyamides, polyethersulfone, polyvinylidene fluoride, and so on. According to the different shapes of membranes, they can be divided into flat membrane, tubular membrane, capillary membrane, hollow fiber membrane, etc. The membranes used in household water purifiers on the market are mostly hollow fiber membranes.

Inorganic membrane: Among inorganic membranes, ceramic ultrafiltration membranes are more commonly used in household water purifiers. The ceramic membrane has a long service life and corrosion resistance, but the outlet water has a unfashionable taste, which affects the taste. Meanwhile, ceramic membranes are prone to clogging and difficult to clean. Hollow fiber ultrafiltration membranes are widely used in the household water purification industry due to their advantages such as high filling density, large effective membrane area, high pure water flux, simple operation and easy cleaning.

The ultrafiltration membrane screening process is driven by the pressure difference on both sides of the membrane, using the ultrafiltration membrane as the filtering medium. Under a certain pressure, when the raw liquid flows through the surface of the membrane, many small micropores densely distributed on the surface of the ultrafiltration membrane only allow water and small molecular substances to pass through and become the permeate. Substances in the raw liquid with a volume larger than the micropores on the membrane surface are intercepted on the inlet side of the membrane, becoming the concentrated liquid, thus achieving the purpose of purifying, separating, and concentrating the raw liquid. There are approximately 6 billion 0.01 micrometer micropores on the wall of each meter long ultrafiltration membrane tube, which only allow water molecules, beneficial minerals, and trace elements in water to pass through. The smallest bacteria have a volume of over 0.02 micrometers, so bacteria and much larger colloids, rust, suspended solids, sediment, and macromolecular organic matter can be intercepted by the ultrafiltration membrane, thus achieving the purification process.
